New Release December 2025

Hand cut paper chickadee by Calvin Nicholls in a frame for display

My miniature sculptures are selling out. The Cardinal, Downy, Nuthatch and Screech owls are almost all gone. One Nuthatch remains in inventory.

It was time to release a new one and a chickadee design had been on my mind for many months. Viewing them at home in our apple tree puts on regular display their frolicking behaviour that unlike most other birds appears playful. They hop and flit from branch to branch and back to feeder taking turns and generally accepting their place in the pecking order with the other birds. Rarely do they  become aggressive but they do display a preference for some “personal space.”

This becomes more obvious in the forest nearby when they mob us looking for handouts. They travel together and use the strategy at the benefit of all so cooperation would appear to be the goal. And yet the aggression is very deliberate if two land at once in the out stretched hand. Immediate displays and loud calls precede a tussle where one or both rise in a flurry of crashing wings and calls.

It was the lighter-than-life, joyful behaviour that I enjoy most and strove to capture it in this new release. Whether caching food for later or looking for insects and larvae under leaves and branches the ease and athleticism they show brings a smile.

I hope you feel the same with my new artwork.

I made seven of these little guys as usual with this series of Backyard Bird sculptures. Each one is a version of the same design so that more of you can purchase one. I’m still gathering the skill to make it easy to purchase from this post.
