Description
You can purchase an art print of my sculpture titled “Against the Cold” showing a dove in the wintry weather where I watched it perched in out apple tree. These birds are not as well adapted to the cold as some resident northern birds. Some struggle especially with damage to their feet. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/new-brunswick-mourning-dove-frostbite-1.6322669 But they do have strategies that provide success in the harshest winters. The ability to fluff up their feathers is one. This allows air to be trapped in between each that warms up and preserves body temperature.
This also offered me an opportunity. Binoculars helped me to zero in on the feather layering around the neck which seemed ideal for my layering technique in paper. It was satisfying to work larger while being focused on just the neck and head. The reflection in the eye was even a bit of fun as I explored ways to add o the illusion of depth through reflected sky and the depth of the iris. The resulting original artwork was framed and shipped securely to the show and later purchased for display in a private collection on the west coast. The limited edition art print can be purchased as an edition of 250 signed copies complete with certificate of authenticity.
Most years I submit pieces to the renowned “Birds in Art” show at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson art museum in Wausau WI. This sculpture was one of those successful entries. It was on display there in 2020 alongside works from many of my international mentor artists.
