Description

paper sculpture of loon for display in home or office
“Drum Roll” common loon by paper sculpture artist Calvin Nicholls

Is this “paper sculpture Loon art print by Calvin Nicholls” a three dimensional sculpture or a flat print? Look closely. Water droplets appear to splash right out over the mat border. Shadows appear under the wing and at the opening of the mat that surrounds the paper art loon and scenery. This illusion of depth often prompts an even closer second and third look.

Witnessing this moment as a loon struggles to take fight in the wild, viewing photos and analysing video guided my sketching and pattern drawings. While working in low-relief, the trick is to use every method available to maximise the illusion of depth.

My reward arrives just prior to framing as the paper sculpture phase is completed. In this instance the sculpture was photographed, framed and delivered to the collector who commissioned it. Most of the work completed in the studio each year is on a custom order basis. The process of discussing a moment in nature or a favourite species is always satisfying and intriguing.

Prior to packing and shipping the artwork I may spend a day exploring lighting effects. Studio lights are positioned to capture the form and texture. Methodically, light is deliberately directed to define the main subject in highlights and shadows. Satisfied that the sculpture is at its best, numerous photos are taken and reviewed.

The final high resolution photo is used to create collector quality images using Epson fine art paper and Giclee inks. Each limited edition art print comes to you complete with a signed and numbered certificate of authenticity. Most of my editions are restricted to only 250 copies and when they’re gone, that’s it. The edition is closed.

When you receive your print you just add a frame and glass. No mats!  I use fine art papers for my sculptures and prints to resist normal aging. Ask your framer about using the very best glazing products including Art Glass https://www.groglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Artglass-for-Picture-Framing.pdf and Optium Museum Acrylic https://tru-vue.com which will filter out harmful UV light for decades to come.
