Description

This hand made screech owl named “Tremolo”was inspired by a visitor to our neighbourhood over the last few years. Majestic century old maple trees line our streets and towering backyard pines, spruce and hemlock trees remind us of a bygone era. A little screech owl has chosen it as home so we often hear its song on evening walks. Have you ever heard the sweet “whinnying” call it makes? On a few occasions it showed itself and because of those moments I felt inspired to create this sculpture.

I selected light weight fine art paper made from 100% cotton for the bird. A thicker version of the same was used for the support. Look closely and you may appreciate my approach to celebrating paper. Not only the owl is captured in paper but the surface it is mounted to floats on a background of archival quality mat board. That material was used on my earlier pieces as the support. I’m really enjoying extending the use of paper in all areas of my presentation.

And how better to display it than under reflection-reducing ArtGlass? It seems to disappear prompting viewers at shows to exclaim their dismay at how there appears to be no protective glass. The art of illusion. I love it.
